It was indeed a grand finale. With glittering blue and white twinkle lights and fanciful chandeliers Associate Professor of Theatre Jaye Beetem and the students in her stagecraft class transformed the Arthur L. Scott Spartan Center into a setting befitting a black tie awards ceremony.
On Friday, October 5, more than 330 guests gathered there to commemorate the conclusion of a week-long celebration of Northampton Community College's 45th anniversary and the inauguration of Dr. Mark Erickson as the College's fourth president. They dined on gourmet fare prepared by NCC's culinary students as they toasted the College, its new president, and the 2012 Community Fabric Award recipients - seven organizations and individuals whose commitment to helping others has strengthened the fabric of the communities Northampton serves.
Emcees Jim Harper and David Shaffer '77 explained that the prestigious awards are only presented once every five years, based on nominations submitted by community leaders, business leaders and prior award-winners.
This year the awards went to
C. F. Martin & Company - Large Company
Kressler, Wolff & Miller - Small Company
Lehigh Valley IronPigs & Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem - Companies Established within the Past 10 Years
Allentown Rescue Mission - Non-Profit Organization
R. Charles "Chuck" Stehly '77 - Volunteer
Michael J. Caruso - "Dream Weaver"
As the program noted, all create "a tapestry made up of the Lehigh Valley's very best."
When the applause subsided, the dancing began as "Rio" again delighted a Northampton crowd with its energy and a musical repertoire spanning the decades.
