Adult Basic Education
Adult Basic Education classes offer help in reading, grammar, writing, spelling, math, life skills, and employment. Individual study, group work, and whole-class lessons are guided by friendly, supportive teachers.
Reading Classes
Students will learn to:
- Read for a variety of adult purposes and for practical information
- Use word attack skills to sound out unfamiliar words
- Understand what they read
- Locate details and facts in written passages
- Use a dictionary for pronunciation and word meaning
- Interpret graph, chart, and map data
- Learn and use strategies to develop independent reading ability
Writing, Grammar and Spelling Classes
Students will learn to:
- Use proper capitalization, punctuation, and parts of speech
- Write notes, letters, brief summaries, and memos
- Improve their spelling skills
Math Classes
Students will learn to:
- Refresh basic skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Use estimation
- Measure accurately
- Calculate using fractions, decimals, and percents
- Examine schedules, maps, and graphs
- Solve word problems that involve combinations of these skills
