Diagnostic Medical Technology

Diagnostic Medical SonographyA sonographer must obtain appropriate history, physical findings and pertinent laboratory data to adapt the imaging techniques to obtain comprehensive information about each patient.  Because various specialties in the field range from obstetrics and gynecology to abdominal, vascular and echocardiography, the sonographer is a key member of a patient's health care team and is highly depended upon to perform the tasks required to make an accurate diagnosis.

Sonography courses are supplemented with hands-on lab practice and instruction at NCC's lab facility in Penn Hall on the main campus. In addition to the instruction that students receive, there is a clinical component within the program that affords students the opportunity to work in area hospitals under the supervision of professional staff while utilizing their learned skills on actual patients.

Admission into the program is competitive and is dependent upon a number of minimum requirements, including but not limited to: completion of high school biology with a grade of B or better, and two units of algebra with a C or better; submission of transcripts and completion of a Career Assessment Form; and a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Applicants must also complete all general education courses that apply to the program, and complete an interview with the program admission committee.
