Certificate Program

New Meeting & Event Planning Certificate
Comprehensive 46 hour program that exposes participants to all areas of the event planning industry. Courses are led by industry professionals who combine their knowledge, experience, and expertise with a passion for teaching and education. Individuals interested in a career in meeting or event planning will find the program helpful in getting started in the industry. Those looking for training, who already have event planning as a component of their current position, will be exposed to new ideas and ways of thinking. Upon completion of the certificate program, participants will be prepared to obtain an entry level position in the event planning industry. Click here to view the certificate group page.

Required Courses (28 Total Hours)
Principles of Meeting & Event Management (7 hours)
Provides a general overview of the various components of meeting and event planning, including site selection, contract negotiations, creating and managing timelines, set-up, audio-visual, food and beverage, onsite management, evaluation, and event follow-up. (offered every semester)

Event Sales & Marketing (7 hours)
Provides the tools they need to successfully develop and maintain a client base in the competitive event world, including creating and following a marketing plan, the sales process, business development strategies, and client relationship building. (offered every fall)

Catering Design & Management (7 hours)
Provides an in-depth look at the food and beverage side of event planning. Topics include menu development and planning, packages, service styles and event flow, and the logistics of offsite catering management.

Financial Planning & Legal Studies for the Event Planner (7 hours)
Provides knowledge in the basics of financial management for events and to become familiar with the legal issues surrounding the industry, including budgeting, profit and loss, contracts, insurance, and liability issues. (offered every spring)

The Business of Weddings & Social Events (6 hours)

Provides an understanding of what it is like to plan and manage weddings and social events, including meeting with clients, working with vendors and sites, timelines, budgets, and onsite coordination. (offered every fall)

Festival Management (6 hours)
Provides participants with an inside look at the logistics, planning, and management of large outdoor festivals that attract thousands of attendees. (offered every fall)

Tradeshows & Exhibits (6 hours)
Provides the tools needed to effectively plan and coordinate tradeshow and exhibit booths and events, includes designing your booth, maximizing your space, selecting a location on the floor, working with unions, minimizing expenses, and engaging your exhibit visitors. (offered every fall)

Corporate Event Planning (6 hours)
For the corporate sector of meeting and event planning. Topics will include program development, coordinating speaker logistics, travel, site selection, registration, and onsite management. Industry involvement and certifications will also be discussed. (offered every spring)

Entrepreneurship: Starting Your Own Catering & Event Business (6 hours)
Provides information on starting and operating your own catering and event planning business, including business plan, office/production site selection, financing your business, and marketing your business. (offered every spring)

Educational Event Management (6 hours)
For participants in education or interested in educational event planning. Topics include planning and managing large events such as graduation, working with students and volunteers, development and fundraising, marketing programs, and working with on-campus partners for event execution. (offered every spring)

Sports Event Management (6 hours)
Introduces participants to the world of sports event management, including sales and marketing, tickets, media management, catering, promotions, and group management. (offered every spring)
