Here's what you need to know
If the weather outside is frightful, how do you know if classes are cancelled? Read on to learn the answer to this and other questions that may be on your mind.
Who decides whether the college is open or not?
Administrators make the decision based on road conditions, the weather forecast, and how quickly the parking lots and walkways on campus can be cleared.
When are the decisions made?
Decisions are made by 6 am for day classes and by 3 pm for evening classes. If classes are in session and the weather gets bad, classes may be suspended at any time.
How can I find out whether classes are being held or not?
The fastest way to find out is to sign up for NCC Alerts, a notification system that enables NCC to text your cellphone or to email you if there is a weather-related closing or delay or a campus emergency. All students are encouraged to sign up for this.
I have an 8 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. class. But NCC has a delay and won't open until 9 am. Do I still go to that class?
Yes. If a class is scheduled to be in session when NCC opens, students are expected to come for the remainder of that class.
I got a text saying evening classes are cancelled. What is considered an evening class?
Any class with a start time of 5 pm or later is considered an evening class. Decisions about evening classes are usually made around 3 pm.
Will we have to make-up class time that is missed?
The College may schedule make-up days to recover lost instructional time in the event that closures for inclement weather and/or other circumstances result in the loss of more than one week of instructional time in campus-based courses. Evening or Saturday classes will add minutes to their class periods to make up lost instructional time.
I don't want to sign up for text messages. How else can I know if NCC is open?
There are a lot of ways to find out!
- At NCC Alerts, you can sign up for e-mail notifications if the College is closed or on a delayed opening.
- If a decision is made to close or delay, it is posted immediately to NCC's Facebook page and Twitter account.
- You can find information about weather closings and delays on many local radio and TV stations.
- Closings are posted on northampton.edu and to NCC's weather information page.
- Call NCC's weather hotline 24 hours a day for closing information:
Bethlehem Campus and Southside Center: 610.861.4595
Monroe Campus: 570.369.1800 X 3
- NCC's Hawley site follows the schedule of area school districts.
NCC is open but I don't feel safe driving. What should I do?
If you decide not to attend due to weather conditions, you must contact your instructors directly. If a test or major assignment is scheduled, faculty may consider alternate arrangements for those students who have maintained consistent attendance and who are up to date on their assignments. It is the responsibility of students to work directly with their instructors.
Stay warm, stay safe, and think spring!
