Community Colleges the Key to Closing Tech's Gender Gap

According to an article in "Marie Claire"

A research report by the American Association of University Women, "Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)," shows that women continue to be far underrepresented in technical fields.

But community colleges are the key to closing technology's gender gap, according to an article in Marie Claire by Lane Florsheim:

"Over half of women who get advanced degrees in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math-related fields) started out at community colleges.  What's more, a recent study by two University of Iowa researchers reported a friendlier atmosphere in STEM-related classes at community colleges.  The researchers found that similarity in backgrounds and lifestyles made women feel more comfortable stepping into leadership roles in activities and assignments.  Strong advising and support from faculty also marked a major difference."

Dr. Jill Biden, an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College, and wife of Vice President  Joe Biden, told Marie Claire that "Women who are interested in pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees-especially in STEM fields-benefit from starting at a community college.  Women who earn a certificate or degree from a community college will be ready to move into a good-paying job in a growing global economy."
