Dr. Vasiliki Anastasakos, Global Studies professor, prepares students to be more world conscience
Dr. Anastasakos, or as many call her, Kiki, earned the title Pennsylvania Professor of the Year, and she does much to uphold that at NCC.
"From the very first moment I set foot inside the classroom more than 25 years ago, I knew that, to prepare my students to become citizens of the world, I had to get them involved in what was going on outside of the classroom as much as what I was teaching them in the classroom - and help them make the connection between the two," Dr. Vasiliki "Kiki" Anastasakos says.
With a warm, inviting personality and an engaging Socratic teaching style, Dr. Anastasakos helps her students refine their thinking about issues, and to discover in themselves answers they never knew they had. Through discussion, group work, class presentations, instructional technology, student projects, guest speakers, field trips and volunteer work in the community, she leads her students to eye-opening views and understanding of issues affecting our world today.
"Global studies could not be a more timely major for our students," Dr. Anasatakos says. "Our world has reached such a critical point that, unless we learn to communicate and collaborate across cultures to find common solutions to global challenges, we will surely be faced with ecological self-destruction and economic and political chaos. Our Global Studies program prepares students to successfully navigate and thrive in a rapidly changing, interdependent world. We expect our graduates to become leaders in bringing about positive change in their local and global communities."
