Way to go, Spartans!
The Northampton women's volleyball team captured their third consecutive Region XIX title with a 3-0 victory over #2 seed Ocean County College on Saturday, October 25, at Montgomery County Community College.
Northampton advanced to the championship match with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-18 victory over 4th seeded Bergen Community College in the semi-finals. Ocean advanced with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-13 win over 6th seeded Passaic County Community College.
The Vikings, in their first year of intercollegiate volleyball, gave Northampton all they could handle in the first set of the championship match, but the Spartans were able to prevail 25-20. The Spartans took the second set 25-16 and then closed out the match with a 25-9 victory to earn the title.
"First, let me give credit to Ocean," remarked Head Coach Adrian Yaguez, "what a remarkable year they had for a first year program, the staff and players really did a great job. As far as our team, I couldn't be prouder ... winning the Region title was one of our goals and now we need to concentrate on the District next weekend if we want to get back to the national tournament."
Tournament MVP Emily Koehler had 15 kills, 4 digs and 3 blocks in the title, match while All-Tournament Team selection Jax Babezki added 9 kills. Anona Bauman recorded 33 assists and Olivia Bobyak had 8 kills, 3 aces and 6 digs. Joining Koehler and Babezki on the All-Tournament team was sophomore Sawyer Hoyak who added 9 digs.
In the first match of the day vs. Begen, Koehler recorded 13 kills and 10 digs, while Babezki had 11 kills and Leah Redline was credited with 7 digs.
Northampton, now 37-1 overall, will wait to find out the winner from Regions 7, 10 and 21, whom they play in a District championship match on November 1st at the winner's site.
