The annual Patrick J. Kraus Freshman Drawing Competition awards ceremony at Northampton Community College took place on April 15 for the 25th consecutive year. Five winning drawings were chosen. The exhibition is juried and open to all freshmen during the spring semester.
The competition is funded by the Patrick J. Kraus Endowment Fund, established by the late John "Duke" Kraus, former NCC bookstore manager, and his wife, Katherine, in memory of their son, Patrick, a talented artist who attended NCC in 1985-86.
Winning artists receive scholarships, funded through an endowment created by the Krauses, toward their tuition for the following fall semester.
Thomas Shillea, director of the NCC art department, thanked the Krauses for their support. Katherine Kraus spoke briefly about her son, who died at the age of 24 in 1988. Speaking about the Kraus Endowment, she said after her son's death, she and her husband struggled to try and "create something good out of something so horrible, and have students benefit." She showed a bronze bas-relief sculpture of her son, created by artist Virginia Abbott.
The winners are:
First Place: Corey Sebring
Second Place: Alexander Counterman
Third Place: Eric Kaczynski
Fourth Place: Zahir Newton
