Last year the Northampton Community College women's volleyball team came up one game short of a trip to the national championships.
New year. New story.
From the time the season opened on September 4 until the district championship on November 2 the Spartans didn't drop a match, finishing the regular season 29-0 and sweeping the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIX championship 3-0.
Once again a trip to the final in Rochester, Minnesota, was only one match away.
The team - and the fans - were not about to let this one get away.
Photos of the team appeared all over campus emblazoned with the words "Mission Minnesota." Soon more signs popped up advertising an "Orange Out."
There was orange in abundance and a deafening roar from the crowd of close to 700 fans when the team took the court to face the Region X champs - the Flyers of Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, North Carolina at noon in the Arthur L. Scott Spartan Center.
Less than two hours later the mission had been accomplished, but not without a few anxious moments.
Minnesota, here we come! The national tournament will be held November 14-16.
