Northampton Community College's education program is among the top degree producers in the nation according to a special report in the June 24 issue of Community College Week.
Each year the publication lists the largest associate degree programs in the country in a variety of fields. This year Northampton is listed as # 42.
Close to 4000 students have graduated from Northampton Community College's education program since 1967. Some have gone directly to work in early childhood education or as paraeducators or teacher's assistants. Those who want to teach in public schools transfer to four-year colleges to earn bachelor's degrees.
Northampton offers five areas of specialization for students interested in careers in education: early childhood education (Infant to Grade 4), middle level education: (Grades 4 to 8), secondary education, secondary education with a concentration in math and science, and special education paraeducator.
A study done by Recruiting New Teachers, Inc. shows that 20% of teachers nationwide begin their postsecondary education at community colleges.
