Music, awards, food, confetti cannons, a coffin on wheels, a dancing president -- this year's Student Celebration at Northampton Community College had everything! Held in the Student Life Zone at the Main Campus on April 23, the event brought together students, faculty and staff to celebrate the achievements of those in student clubs and intercollegiate sports.
Timothy Semonich, chairperson of Student Senate, was the dapper MC in tux and tie. He introduced Zahra Josie, who gave a rousing rendition of the National Anthem. Members of the Christian Fellowship Club followed with the invocation.
Special recognition was given to the NCC Physical Plant staff, most of which were in attendance. Presenter Carolina Mayer pointed out, "They make events like this possible."
A cavalcade of student clubs featured a seemingly unending parade of members, many who dressed -- or, in the case of the "This is My Body Project," undressed -- for the occasion. Highlights included the Ski Club member who skied down the red carpet, and Funeral Services Club members who wheeled in a coffin as the caboose to the parade.
A colorful march of the many international flags that represent the native countries of NCC students was headed up by a bagpiper playing "Scotland the Brave." Other entertainment included performances by Acta Non Verba dance club, the NCC Break Dancers, and the International Love Band.
Arguably the highlight of the event came when Student Senator Charles Moronski took the stage to present the Club Advisor of the Year award. He appeared to take issue with the manner in which the award was to be presented, and instead began dancing to "Gangnam Style," pulling NCC President Dr. Mark Erickson and Vice President of Academic Affairs Jeff Focht up on the floor to join in, along with other students. The dance culminated in the announcement that Mark Orse, admissions assistant, had been named Club Advisor of the Year.
After all the awards, the event ended with the singing of NCC's alma mater by the NCC Community Choir, and closing remarks from Dr. Erickson, in which he expressed pride in "what great students we have," and in the faculty and staff who support them.
