Picturing the Good Life

NCC Student's Design Chosen for 2015-2016 NEH Series

by Myra Saturen,

Many people seek The Good Life, but how do you represent that concept pictorially?

Susan Sewell, a major in communication and design for print and the Web, created a logo that has been chosen to publicize Northampton Community College's (NCC) 2015-2016 National Endowment for the Humanities theme, The Good Life. She created the logo in Gayle Hendricks's digital design and topography class to represent The Good Life through symbols of knowledge, home, family, peace, and love.

A graduate of Temple University's Tyler School of Art with a bachelor's degree in fine arts for glass, Sewell returned to school at Northampton for graphic design because it is a flourishing occupation that offers an abundance of opportunities across numerous fields.

She says that her time at NCC has been well spent.  "Gayle Hendricks is always giving us different opportunities to shine, which allows students to be a little competitive, which is a good thing: it pushes our work into a more thoughtful and deliberate space."

Sewell, who will graduate from Northampton this spring, looks forward to creating more work and having a successful career.

She is grateful to have had her design chosen.  "I love being challenged to create a well-thought-out design based on a client's needs," she says.  "These experiences give students the chance to put their work and designs out there for their school and have it seen by many people, which is an opportunity that could lead to other opportunities," she says.
