Northampton Community College (NCC) is partnering with Wayne Pike Workforce Alliance to help community members get their GED. Anyone who is 18 and over can take advantage of the free GED classes and take the test, all in one location.
Through the partnership, Wayne Pike Workforce Alliance provides outreach, recruitment, and intake services and hosts the classes at their Workforce Alliance office in Honesdale. NCC’s Center for College and Career Readiness provides in-person instruction, case management services, and instructional materials through funding from the Division of Adult Education. NCC’s existing PA Department of Education funding provides financial support to Pike and Wayne Counties to establish adult basic education, GED, and ESL classes.
The initiative also aims to help break down barriers for students looking to get their GED, including things like transportation issues, childcare, etc., that prevent many students from coming to class.
“It is important to expand adult literacy services into rural areas where the population may have limited access to educational resources. Improving English skills or obtaining a GED is the gateway to entering employment, upward mobility in an existing job, and advancing to other post-secondary education and training opportunities,” says NCC’s Director of the Center for College and Career Readiness, William Schaffer.
At the Monroe campus and the Fowler Family Southside Center, NCC offers adult basic education, GED, English as a Second Language, and English Language Civics education classes. The college is contracted to serve 535 students in this academic year.
