Northampton Community College (NCC) student, Leslie Sinanan, discovered her interest in dental hygiene from her own personal hygienist, who showed her all that the role entailed. Sinanan was motivated to apply to the dental hygiene program at NCC after hearing about the quality of the program.
Throughout her time at NCC, Sinanan has seized numerous opportunities that have transformed her into a more outgoing and confident individual. Engaging in public presentations through the college, speaking engagements and volunteer work has helped her become an integral part of the community around her. She will be this spring’s Bethlehem campus commencement speaker.
One of Sinanan's biggest challenges was managing two jobs while carrying a full-time course load consisting of seven classes. Despite the immense pressure, she was determined to succeed in the face of adversity. She earned two scholarships for exceptional scores on her dental exams, the Louise Moore Pine Scholarship and the Arnold R. Cook Dental Hygiene Examination Scholarship. She also received the Dr. Aaron M. Litwak and Sarah T. Litwak Scholarship to attend NCC.
Like many students, Sinanan had a lot on her plate. She emphasizes the importance of organization and perseverance in navigating the demands of the dental hygiene program. She advises future students to stay on top of requirements and assignments, especially in managing patient requirements.
“The classes and clinic are going to be challenging. It does not necessarily get easier, but it is so worth it once you reach the end. You will have a sense of pride with every win. The faculty is incredibly supportive and willing to provide advice or a safe space to speak with them,” Sinanan says.
Sinanan is eager to begin her professional career by finding her first position in a dental office. Her long-term goal is to further her education and obtain a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. Eventually, she aspires to become a professor in dental hygiene, guiding and mentoring aspiring hygienists.
