Grad Profile: Jennifer Fleetwood

Jennifer Fleetwood, this winter’s graduate commencement speaker, was a professional studies major at Northampton Community College (NCC). Her journey at NCC began as a records assistant in 2021, but she soon took advantage of the opportunity to expand her knowledge through the college.

Fleetwood chose to pursue an associate’s degree in professional studies, a decision rooted in its versatility. The program provided her with freedom to explore a variety of subjects through electives aligned with her future educational aspirations.

The path to graduation was not without challenges. At thirty-six years old, her return to school after nearly two decades presented its own set of obstacles. Fleetwood and her husband both decided to continue their education around the same time, her partner in a full-time accelerated bachelor’s program and Fleetwood as a part-time NCC student. Balancing a full-time job, supporting her partner’s academic endeavors, and raising her young daughter made for a demanding yet rewarding journey.

Fleetwood’s passion for creative pursuits, particularly writing, flourished during her time at NCC. In the summer of 2023, she attended the Yale Writer’s Workshop, a transformative experience that further fueled her drive. That same year, she began working on her first full-length manuscript. Additionally, she completed the Creative Writing Specialized Diploma (SD) in Winter 2023 and the Publishing for Writers SD in Spring 2024, achievements that underscore her dedication to her craft.

One of Fleetwood’s most cherished experiences at NCC is her role as editor-in-chief of The Laconic, the college’s magazine.

“Over three semesters on staff, I found guidance and encouragement in the faculty advisors and camaraderie among fellow students. The hands-on experience in publishing and editing through The Laconic has equipped me with practical skills I intend to carry forward into future opportunities in the publishing world.”

Looking ahead, Fleetwood’s goals include earning a master’s degree and becoming an English professor, a role in which she can inspire others just as the NCC community has inspired her. In the meantime, she continues to excel in her full-time job in higher education, finding fulfillment in a field that aligns with her interests and skills.
