Tosha Henrich, healthcare office coordinator major at Northampton Community College (NCC), came to the college after earning her billing and coding certification online from Ashworth College in 2020. In fall 2022, she started at NCC and finished her internship with St. Luke’s University Health Network (SLUHN) as a practice coordinator at a doctor’s office.
“I chose medical billing and coding because I knew I wanted to be in the healthcare field but not on the clinical side of things. I thought the different insurances would be interesting to learn about, and I knew someone in this role who said they really enjoyed what they did. Plus, most coders work remotely, which is a huge perk!”
With 3 children, Brianna age 17, Logan age 15, and Dylan age 10, Henrich juggles home life, schooling and work.
“They have been watching me work hard for the things I want in life, and I strive to be the best role model I can be for them! I also have a husband who is my biggest supporter and helps me wherever he can. He makes working full-time, 40-50 hours a week, and being in school part-time possible!”
Henrich plans to continue her studies in health information management (HIM) at Western Governors University. She will learn how to properly gather, interpret, and protect the patient’s electronic health records along with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and compliance-based rules that are used in the medical coding field. “A lot of classes from my office coordinator degree at NCC will transfer over, which is really nice.”
Ultimately, Henrich would love to be a medical coding auditor.
"I feel empowered since receiving a college education, and I now have the skills needed to advance in my field. I give huge props to anyone older who decides to go back to school. It takes a large amount of dedication and commitment to achieve this great milestone.”
