NCC Staff Members Take it All Off for Charity

InMurtha, Bartholomew, Henry and Armstrong -- before a move that some called "unprecedented bravery," a group of men from Northampton Community College submitted to the razor and the waxer on April 12. The four -- Jeff Armstrong, assistant professor of psychology; Matt Bartholomew, counseling; Mark Henry, director of advising/transfer; and Mitch Murtha, assistant dean of students -- pledged back in March that they would remove hair from significant body parts, depending on how much money was raised by NCC's Psychology Club for two autism awareness charities. The more money raised, the more hair would come off.

For example, for $500, Armstrong and Bartholomew would shave their beards. For $750, Armstrong and Murtha would wax their legs. At the $1,000 mark, Armstrong, Murtha and Henry would shave their heads. Bartholomew (who already shaves his head) would wear a wig for a week.

Students, faculty and staff did their part -- the grand total raised was $1,500 -- and at 11 a.m. in Laub Lounge, the hair began to fall. Armstrong, the hairiest of the group, went first, with various bidders taking turns at shaving off his long, dark brown locks and beard. Henry and Murtha's shearing soon followed.

Jeff Armstrong, giving 'til it hurtThen the real fun began, as first Armstrong, then Bartholomew and Murtha submitted to leg-waxing by a trained professional from Corey Michael's Hair Design. Shouts of "Kelly Clarkson!" and "Shakira!" -- from Steve Carrell's waxing scene in "The 40-Year Old Virgin" --  rang through the air as the men had their leg hair ripped out, strip by painful strip. As one student commented, "Now that's walking a mile in her shoes!"

The Psychology Club will participate in two autism awareness walks this semester -- one for Autism Speaks, a national organization; and another for Live, Learn, Play, a local organization that keeps all money in the Lehigh Valley. To raise money, the club sold wristbands, t-shirts, baked goods and other items.
