NCC Learns Olympic Dance

The Ondo dance

Mia Rossi,

Japanese dancers performed at Northampton Community College (NCC) on April 16 and 17 on Bethlehem Campus. Two of the dancers demonstrated very special choreography to students, faculty and staff dressed in beautiful kimonos supplied by our guests.

Hana Takehiro lead the charge. Takehiro is one of the artists commissioned by the Japanese Government to choreograph the official dance, the Ondo dance, for the 2020 Olympics that will be held in Tokyo.

Takehiro’s colleague, Tomoka Asada, demonstrated this dance as on-lookers watched in awe. Participants followed along well as Asada took her time teaching.

Takehiro and Asada gave a brief talk about the origins and meaning behind the dance.
