The prestigious Trustee Leadership Award went to Patrick F. Grifone, a business administration major and the only NCC student to ever receive both the Trustee Patrick Grifone and Dr. EricksonLeadership Award and the Irvine Freshman Leadership Award. In giving the student address, Grifone recalled entering NCC with halfhearted goals and expectations for himself. But professors and administrators saw qualities in in him that he did not know he had. With their encouragement, he became involved in leadership activities, winning election to the Student Senate, of which he is the president, and helping develop the NCC Day of Service. He found great satisfaction in helping his peers to discover their potential, as he had discovered his.

Grifone called his acceptance speech for the Trustee Leadership a thank -you speech. He expressed gratitude for the inspiring learning environment fostered at NCC and praised the dedication of faculty and staff. "On behalf of NCC students-past, present and future-I humbly thank you," he said. His advice to students? "Put in maximum effort and say yes to opportunities." Grifone will be continuing his education at Temple University.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Mark Erickson expressed gratitude, too. He said he is grateful to be the president of Northampton Community College and reaffirmed what a special place the College is. "We have amazing students who have the potential to go anywhere they want to go," he said.

Several speakers thanked the students' families for their support of their children, spouses and parents.

Vocalist Calvin Hunter sang America the Beautiful at the beginning of the program, and the NCC anthem, Oh Northampton, by Professor Mario Acerra, at the end.

Happiness and pride marked the ceremony, one of the most important of the academic year. View more photos from this event in the photo gallery.
