The 2024-2025 Annual Humanities Program, Stories That Shape Us: Turn the Page, Connect, Engage!, includes a mindfully orchestrated lineup of events dedicated to the exploration of cultural narratives that shape our understanding of the world. Through engaging discussions, interactive workshops, compelling community activities, and innovative speakers, participants will have the opportunity to delve into new perspectives that challenge conventional thinking. This year’s humanities program has been designed to broaden your outlook, foster deep empathy, and inspire civic engagement, empowering us all to become active participants in creating a more inclusive and equitable society. Whether you're looking to learn, connect, or act, this series offers valuable insights and tools to make a meaningful impact in your community.

Student networking event during Quadfest

Humans have been exploring stories of the universe since ancient times. Join the Lehigh Valley Amateur Astronomical Society (LVAAS) for a planetarium show and presentation to learn more about our place in the universe. This is an open event for NCC students, faculty, staff, and the local community. Sign up and specify if you require transportation from NCC’s Bethlehem campus to the Star Party. 6PM- Planetarium show; 7PM- Astronomy presentation.

Join Keri Maxfield from the Nurture Nature Center in NCC’s East 40 to record observations, reflect, and create sketches of the natural world. This workshop combines elements of scientific observation and artistic expression, fostering a deeper connection and understanding of nature. All needed supplies will be provided for attendees. Calling all outdoor enthusiasts! Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to survive in the wilderness? Are you looking to brush up on your knowledge of edibles and important skills such as fire building and shelter building? Visit the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center to participate in this two-hour survival skills program. This program is for ages 14 and up. Seats are limited & sign-up is required. As part of National Voter Education Week, join us for a panel discussion and Q&A lunch where experts from various organizations will share insights on the top issues important to you from a non-partisan lens, including gun violence, cost of living, reproductive health, climate change, and social justice.

Join NCC students, faculty, and staff for a unique tour where you can walk alongside the women who formed the city of sisterly love. Uncover the incredible entrepreneurs, doctors, politicians, artists, and activists that have made the city what it is today. There will be time for lunch on your own in historic Philadelphia after the tour. Roundtrip transportation will be provided between the NCC Bethlehem campus and the tour location. Bus departs at 9AM and returns by 4:15PM. Seats are limited & registration is required.

Storytelling for Impact with Caitlin Mitchell of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
In busy times with many competing bids for our focus, personal narratives and individual stories still capture our attention and help us make sense of the world. In this session, participants will learn how storytelling can be used to drive change, including test-driving some evidence-based recommendations for crafting and sharing impactful stories.

 

Effective Storytelling: Avoiding Exploitation with Dr. Gina Turner
Using stories can be a powerful teaching tool and can provide students with viewpoints from people they haven't encountered in their lives. However, effective storytelling needs to avoid using stories in an exploitative way. This workshop will provide helpful context and tips.
