Employer Engagement

Job Shadow Opportunities for Employers

Our goal is to help as many Northampton students as possible find opportunities to explore and experience careers first hand. We are excited to build new partnerships with our local businesses to allow students to learn about new career paths and industries. One of the ways we help students explore is through experiential learning opportunities such as job shadows.

A job shadow is an opportunity for students to explore a specific career path and experience a day in the life of an employee. Job shadows typically include: a tour of the workplace, a discussion about job responsibilities, and the opportunity for students to watch and experience a typical day on the job. Employers are not expected to cease your daily activities to host the students.

  • Opportunity to engage talent and build your employee pipeline.
  • Create meaningful relationships with exceptional students.
  • Trial run for future candidates for internship opportunities.
  • Enhanced company branding with college students.
  • Ability to showcase your facilities and highlight why students should work for your company.

Employer Host FAQs

The following dates are available to host students:

  • Monday, January 13th
  • Tuesday, January 14th
  • Wednesday, January 15th
  • Thursday, January 16th
  • Friday, January 17th

You have the option of choosing a half day (9:00 – 1:00 or 1:00 – 5:00) or a full day (9:00- 4:00). As the host you are responsible for creating a schedule for the students and coordinating who will participate in the program from the company. The schedule should include a tour of the facility, attending meetings, informational interviews with staff, overseeing work functions, and opportunities for students to ask questions.

Job shadows offer companies an opportunity to showcase their employment facilities and create a pipeline of future employees. It allows you to build relationships with students and increase your brand awareness among the college community. This also allows you to engage your current employees and provide them with a mentorship opportunity. You will also be making a lasting impact on students who are still determining their career goals and giving them valuable tools to make that decision.

We recommend involving individuals in specific job roles, a member of the human resources team, and a short interaction with senior level leadership when possible.

Students will follow the agenda you provide, but you can expect students to: observe job functions, have one on one conversations with individuals in various job roles, take a tour, network, spend time with executives, and learn from HR about internship or future job opportunities.

We will open registration June 24th, 2024 and close registration for employers on October 6, 2024. For a comprehensive timeline of employer expectations, please click here (PDF).

Students will be able to apply for the program October 16th - October 31st, 2024. Employers will be notified of how many students matched to their company by November 19th, 2024.

Our career development team reads the essays students submit and looks closely at their career interests. We match students to their top selections whenever possible.

Yes, the job shadow can take place virtually. We do recommend if you choose this option to keep the experience to a half day.

Students will not be expected to travel in the event NCC closes due to inclement weather. The Career Services office will notify employers and students of any cancellations. We can assist you in rescheduling the job shadow later in the week, if the company and the student(s) are both interested.
