Smart Start Class
The Smart Start Summer Bridge Program is a free, comprehensive summer orientation program that runs from July 29 to August 2, 2024, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This program is designed to ease and support your transition to college by providing the academic skills and social resources needed to succeed in a college environment. Predominantly low-income, at-risk first-time freshman students from local high schools apply for this program. The Smart Start Summer Bridge Program helps students get acquainted with college resources and services to help prepare them for their first year of college. Participants will learn various college success and study skills strategies, including time and money management, growth mindset and language of responsibility, stress reduction techniques, the differences between high school and college, motivation, and transitioning from high school to college.
Who is eligible to apply?
Students who are:- Enrolled full-time and chose the classes they will take at NCC during the Fall 2024 semester.
- From local high schools in Bethlehem, Easton, Northampton, and Allentown School Districts.
- Have a high school GPA ranging between 2.35 and 3.35 or require help understanding college expectations and demands (need help with study skills).
- Have financial challenges or need financial aid; low-income students may need more financial knowledge and resources than students with college-educated parents.
- Minority students or first-generation college students who require mentorship or a strong support system.
The Smart Start Summer Bridge Program was established in the summer of 2007 and has served over 270 students who actively participated, providing them with the necessary skills to succeed in college.
The deadline to apply is July 10, 2024. This program is limited to 25 students.
Students who complete the four-day program will earn credit for the Cols101 course.
Yearly services include:
- Study skills assistance.
- Mentoring opportunities with the Smart Start Staff and other Faculty Members.
- Help completing financial aid forms and Scholarship Forms.
- Priority registration and Advising.
- Access to Study Skills tips in the form of by monthly emails or newsletters.
- Support for students wishing to transfer to four-year institutions.
